What is AREDS and what did it find?
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a 10-year study sponsored by the federal government's National Eye Institute. AREDS was completed in 2001 and its findings proved that people with the risk of developing Advanced Macular Degeneration lowered their risk of permanent vision loss when treated with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Zinc.

What was the original AREDS formula?

• 125 mg Vitamin C per tablet
• 100 IU Vitamin E per tablet
• 7160 IU Vitamin A per tablet
• 17.4 mg Zinc per tablet
• 0.4 mg Copper per tablet

In this formula, four(4) pills was the dosage. The specific daily amounts of antioxidants and zinc used by the study researchers were 500 milligrams of vitamin C; 400 International Units of vitamin E; 15 milligrams of beta-carotene (often labeled as equivalent to 25,000 International Units of vitamin A); 80 milligrams of zinc as zinc oxide; and two milligrams of copper as cupric oxide. Copper was added to the AREDS formulations containing zinc to prevent copper deficiency anemia, a condition associated with high levels of zinc intake.
