Our new dry eye formula can help to reduce dry eye symptoms, including burning, stinging, redness and intermittent visual disturbances. For this reason, many eye doctors are now recommending the new Macular Health Dry Eye Formula for their patients who suffer from dry eyes. Recent Studies have found that certain combinations of vitamins, minerals, and omega-3 fatty acids tend to decrease inflammation and improve tear gland secretions.

Our new Macular Health Dry Eye formula has specific dosages of key ingredients to help maximize dry eye relief. We developed this new formula to treat the core of the problem from the inside out. Many patients may find that they no longer need re-wetting drops although we recommend using both the Macular Health Dry Eye Formula in tandem with the re-wetting drops for maximum benefit.

Key Ingredients

Borage Seed Oil: Borage Seed Oil is derived from the seeds of the Borago officinalis (borage). It is used medicinally as an anti-inflammatory, for treating arthritis, as well as certain skin conditions (e.g.atopic dermatitis), dry eyes and respiratory inflammation. It has one of the highest amounts of gamma-linolenic acid (omega 6) of seed oils - higher than blackcurrant seed oil or evening primrose oil, to which it is considered similar. GLA makes up around 24% of the oil typically. A specific extraction process may offer purified products with 50%+ GLA content.

Warning: Pregnant women and nursing women should avoid borage seed oil supplements because they may cause early labor or be expressed in breast milk. People who have seizure disorders should not take supplements that contain GLA. Possible side effects of borage oil include headaches, nausea, loose stools and abdominal pain. Borage seed oil may interact with medications, such as blood thinners, antibiotics and immuno-suppressants.

Flaxseed Oil: Flaxseed oil is the world's richest source of Omega-3 fatty acids - twice as much as fish oil. Flaxseed is considered the best and one of the most effective resource to eliminate dryness from the eyes. Many reports have linked flaxseed oil to increased comfort when used to manage dry eye. Researchers suggest that in general, most individuals could benefit from a diet that includes more n-3 fatty acids. Such therapy may also benefit a person's skin, mucosa, cardiovascular system and central nervous system. Flaxseed oil contains healthy Omega-3 fatty acids thought to help restore the oily portion of a tear film that moistens the eye. Studies indicate positive results, though the remedy does not work for everyone. Some researchers say including fish oil as a supplement makes flaxseed oil even more effective.

Omega-3 Fish Oil: Adequate intake of Omega-3s help to improve tear production and since most of us do not get enough Omega-3s from our regular diet taking healthy amounts of Omega-3s in a supplement can help us to improve tear production. In a study conducted by researchers at Harvard Medical School, participants who consumed the highest amount of Omega-3 fatty acids had an 83% lower risk of dry eye syndrome. 32,470 female health professionals aged between 45 and 84 years provided information on diet and Dry Eye Syndrome. Based on this study, oral Omega-3 fish oil supplements may provide dry eye relief.

Without a doubt, fish oil (EPA and DHA fatty acids) is the single most important nutritional deficiency in the U. S. Omega-3 oils are important to your health in relation to fighting depression, inflammation, dry eyes and Alzheimer's.

Most cases of dry eyes can be cleared up, as this research suggests, simply by increasing consumption of healthy Omega-3 fats.

Precautions

As with any nutritional supplement, it's a good idea to consult with your family physician or eye doctor before taking significant quantities of flaxseed oil or fish oil for dry eyes. This is particularly true if you take any prescription or non-prescription medicines, as adverse drug interactions can occur.

Be especially careful if you take blood thinners (even aspirin), as both flaxseed oil and fish oil can increase the risk of bleeding and reduce blood clotting when used along with these medications.

Long-term use of fish oil may cause a vitamin E deficiency in some individuals. Therefore, it's a good idea to look for fish oil supplements that also contain vitamin E, or take a multiple vitamin that contains this vitamin if you take fish oil supplements for dry eyes.
