Frequently Asked Questions
about Macular Degeneration and
Macular Health
1. What is the Macula?
The human eye is similar to a camera with the retina being like the film in the camera. The macula is the central part of the retina where fine vision (reading vision) takes place. The macula provides straight-ahead vision.
2. What is Macular Degeneration?
Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in Americans 60 years or older. Reading vision and driving vision are damaged by this condition. AMD is a permanent deterioration of the macula, which progresses over time.
3. Is there a cure for Macular Degeneration?
NO, but there is a way to decrease the risk of permanent vision loss by taking Macular Health.
4. What is AREDS and what did it find?
The Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) was a 10-year study sponsored by the federal government's National Eye Institute. AREDS was completed in 2001 and its findings proved that people with the risk of developing Advanced Macular Degeneration lowered their risk of permanent vision loss when treated with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin A and Zinc.
5. Who should take these vitamins?
This study found that patients with moderate forms of macular degeneration benefited from vitamin supplementation.
6. What was the original AREDS formula?
125 mg Vitamin C per tablet
100 IU Vitamin E per tablet
7160 IU Vitamin A per tablet
17.4 mg Zinc per tablet
0.4 mg Copper per tablet
In this formula, four(4) pills was the dosage. The specific daily amounts of antioxidants and zinc used by the study researchers were 500 milligrams of vitamin C; 400 International Units of vitamin E; 15 milligrams of beta-carotene (often labeled as equivalent to 25,000 International Units of vitamin A); 80 milligrams of zinc as zinc oxide; and two milligrams of copper as cupric oxide. Copper was added to the AREDS formulations containing zinc to prevent copper deficiency anemia, a condition associated with high levels of zinc intake.
7. Does Macular Health contain the vitamins and minerals similar to the AREDS?
YES. Macular Health has also has added the macular nutrients Lutein, Zeaxanthin and Bilberry.
8. Can I also take my daily multi-vitamin with Macular Health?
Yes, we recommend a one-a-day multi-vitamin in addition to the Macular Health formula.
9. Why weren't Lutein and Zeaxanthin included in the AREDS?
Lutein and Zeaxanthin were not available when AREDS was started, but they have been included in Macular Health.
10. What are Lutein and Zeaxanthin?
They are potent antioxidant carotenoids found in fruits and green leafy vegetables. They are the dominant pigments found in the macula, which can increase the macular pigment density.
11. What are the advantages of Macular Health over competing products?
A. Macular Health requires only one easy to swallow capsule daily versus up to four tablets of competing products.
B. Macular Health contains Lutein and Zeaxanthin the dominant pigments found in the macula that are recommended by many eye doctors.
C. Macular Health is much less expensive than competing products, in most cases it sells for far less.
D. Macular Health was specifically developed with the help of an Ophthalmologist for the benefit of his many patients with AMD. His patients asked for the AREDS formula including Zeaxanthin and Lutein in one easy to swallow capsule.
12. Can Macular Health help people who do not suffer currently from macular degeneration but want to take a supplement for prevention?
Though there is no current study to prove the benefit of Macular Health for patients without age-related macular degeneration (AMD), many doctors believe that it may be beneficial to aging adults, especially those with a family history of AMD.
13. Is Macular Health safe for people under 60 who want to take the supplement to prevent macular degeneration or as an enhancement to overall health?
The Macular Health vitamin supplement has been proven to prevent the progression of AMD. Macular Health is specially formulated to prevent overdose of vitamins that could be harmful if taken in excessive dosages. Patients should always consult with a doctor or pharmacist before taking new supplements or medications.
